A video course is a set of recorded lessons you watch on your own schedule. "Online course" is the broader label, and it can mean recorded video, live lessons over webcam, a text-and-tab program, or a mix. So every video course is an online course, but not every online course is mostly video. Check what the product actually delivers before you buy.
How the terms are used in practice
Marketing is loose here. Sellers use "online course" for almost anything delivered through a browser. Read the product page for what you get, not the label.
| Video course | Other online courses | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Pre-recorded lessons | Can include live sessions, written lessons, tab files, or app-based exercises |
| Feedback | Usually none unless the course adds a community or review option | Varies; some offer teacher feedback, and you should confirm this on the official site |
| Pacing | Fully self-directed | Self-paced, scheduled, or both |
| Cost | Varies by seller | Varies by seller |
We aren't listing prices because they change. Confirm current pricing, access terms and refund policies on the seller's own page.
What matters for soloing
If you've played for years and your solos feel stuck, the format matters less than whether the course addresses your specific problem. Look for:
- Clear scope. Does it teach scale shapes you already know, or phrasing, note choice over chord changes, and vocabulary?
- Backing tracks. You need to apply ideas over real harmony, not just watch them.
- Feedback. A recorded video can't hear your bends or timing. If you want your playing assessed, look for a course that explicitly offers it.
- Sample lessons. A preview tells you more about teaching style than a sales page does.
Recommended for youBest Minor Pentatonic Guitar Course for Intermediate SoloistsWhat a course won't do
No course guarantees you'll improve. Progress comes from deliberate practice, such as transcribing solos, recording yourself, and working on a few ideas until they're automatic. A good course can structure that work, but it can't do it for you.
